Description

The arch is the top of his hat. The top of the lead pipe is his left eye. The hole from the missing fourth wire is his nostril. The left point of the red square is his nose. The cuts on that square are his beard. The grooves on the base of the lead pipe is the end of his tie. The figure is resting on an ivory slab.

"Trio" is probably my personal favourite so I am going to describe it more to hopefully give it a better understanding.

The idea is a construction of a monument or sculpture to honor the jazz trios of Thelonious Monk. This was created from a simple sketch, so it actually was born unintentionally; another reason why I appreciate this piece more than most.

As in its description, it is a profile bust or portrait of the pianist. What I like best about this or any visual, is what can be gained by viewing a subject in multiple ways. There are "distractions" to what the piece is as it can be broken down into just an outline of the structure to create the profile. This would mean ignoring the bright red and other representational forms that really have no business being involved in a portrait.

This piece is also significant to me because it represents my idea of listening to jazz music. That there are many ways to listen; to listen to certain instruments while ignoring others; yet, the complete sound of the band is entering your senses. It will depend on your focus at a particular time. One note alone is one thing by itself but when it is added to another note from another instrument, it takes on a different life.

So, this piece looks like some sort of simple three-level structure. But is also a profile as you follow the top (hat), down the left side to the tip of his nose (red point) to the grooves at the end of the lead pipe (the tie).

This is jazz to me.
